On the negative side of deciding to live in Tenerife you may find problems with the ex-pat community in Tenerife. There are some that treat Tenerife as little England and have nothing better to do than gossip about other expats. Normally you would hope to find people that live in a foreign country helpful and courteous, that is not always the case. Some long established expats want nothing more than you to fail in your new life and your business to fail also. I must emphasise that not all are like this but you will certainly come across them as you establish yourself in your new life. One rule I have used whilst living in Tenerife is that tell no one anything and keep yourself to yourself then no one has anything to gossip about. Very negative I know, also do not trust anyone. Whilst living in Tenerife I have seen and heard of the expats ripping many people off financially and have had the experience myself. If you are buying a business, car, house or anything that is a substantial investment use a Lawyer. Do not lend money to anyone as you will never get it back. You may read this is and say no that cant be true but wait a while and you will see where I am coming from, be warned.
Always use tradesmen that have been recommended and use the services of translators, Business Agents, Lawyers etc. by recommendation only. Get a quote and compare it with others. If your business agent tells you it is a thousand euros for your opening license check with the authorities that you have to pay, it is probably only four hundred euros. You will find all sorts of scams to get extra money out of you and believe me you will fall for at least one.
