About 10 million years ago Mount Teide created Tenerife and the last eruption was in 1707. Mount Teide is the highest point in Spain and the Canary Islands, It is also the third highest volcano in the world

If you are planning to visit Mount Teide then a a thin jacket, water and good footwear is advisable, this is only if you are going to walk up to the volcano. However even if you visit Mount Teide in summer you should take a jumper with you because it is quite cold at the top, you may even experience breathlessness because the air is thin. There is a cable car which takes you from the base of Mount Teide to just below the summit, this is a lot easier then walking up. To be able to reach the summit you are in need of a permit, these are easy to pick up but without a permit walkers are only allowed to the second viewpoint. About 2.5 million tourists visit Mount Teide a year. At such high levels the air is very thin and people with heart conditions or pregnant women are advised not to ascend up the mountain.
