Tenerife

Tenerife Schools

If you are moving to Tenerife and you have children one of the things that will be at the forefront of your mind is their education. You have to decide as to whether you will be putting them into the Spanish State Education system or if they will be going to a private English School. Some of the facts to take into consideration are the children’s ages and the cost of Private fees. If you have several children the cost of private education may be prohibitive. The other consideration of course is that the private English Schools do follow the English Educational system so they do GCSE’s and SAT’s so if you decide to leave Tenerife and go back to the UK your children should be able to continue where they left off. If your children are quite young say up to age 9 they should fit into the Spanish system well as they will pick the language up quite quickly. If your children do go to Spanish School you should look at it long term, if they should go back into the English system after a number of years they will be far behind as they have not been writing in English or reading in English and have not been learning the basics of English Education such as English History. They will have in fact been “Canaryised”. I know many expats who have lived in Tenerife for many years will disagree with me but the plain facts are that most expats end up returning to the UK for whatever reason and this is why the decision English or Spanish is so important you have to consider the “What if” syndrome. There are number of private Schools on Tenerife and we have added links to some below

Wingate School is located at Cabo Blanco in the South of Tenerife and they cater for children from Nursery up to the age of 18.
